For Arts Sake is a Community Interest Company (CIC) that was formed in October 2009 as a way of ensuring the continuation of the art materials shop that had been successfully trading at The Strond in Holm. With the sad demise of the Strond Project it was important to carry on this service to the Orkney community.
At present, there are two Directors - Jan Judge and Roella Wilson – who share responsibility for the management of this business.
Our front of house is headed by Steph, Emilie and Cassie, who are ably supported by Ali, Gary, Merryn, Maggie, Lesley, Susanna, Meg. On Saturdays we usually have a volunteer, but this post is vacant at present....
For Arts Sake is run as a Community Interest Company which includes an element of Social Enterprise, with excess profits going to local charities.
We are very excited to announce that we have now become part of the “Orkney Creative Hub”
which means that we will be able to use a dedicated space for the groups and workshops, allowing us to offer much much more. Watch out for more news on these changes as they happen.
The Art Shop will be retained at For Arts Sake and the new company has retained the status of CIC, a Community Interest Company. For Arts Sake also offers opportunities for volunteering and work experience. If you are interested in working with us please give us a ring on 873234, send an email or pop in and see us.
The Company aims to:
• Promote social inclusion, equality and diversity
• Advance education in the creative arts
• Promote personal development and well-being
• Support artistic community activities
We are pleased to be able to move downstairs at VAO giving us much more space for the range of fibres and equipment that we now stock, and have workshop space during the week.
Look out for the adverts for the WeekDay workshops, in addition to our Saturday workshop programme.
We can also now offer one to one tuition if you would like some personal help with your projects. Just call the shop for more information.
We are delighted to announce that the gallery space will be retained after our move.
With the natural light, high ceilings and welcoming feel we hope this will be an inspiring space to see more of the creative talent that Orkney nurtures.
For those of you who remember the exhibtions from The Strond we are delighted that this project has now come to fruition. The final piece of the jigsaw has fallen into place.
We are talking to established artists to arrange exhibtions but if you would like to be considered please contact us.
We look forward to seeing you at the gallery.
