Lyness HMS Vanguard Commemoration

Last Tuesday was the anniversary of the loss in Scapa Flow by a series of internal explosions of the battleship HMS Vanguard, in a summer evening on 9th July 1917.  Only two of the 845 officers and sailors aboard the battleship anchored two miles north of Flotta survived the tragic event.  Contingents from Kirkwall and Stromness Branches of the Royal British Legion and the Orkney Branch of the Royal Naval Association travelled to Lyness to lay wreaths and for a short service on Tuesday.  Photos of the service, which was conducted by Jean Gillespie, can be seen using the link below.
