George Esson's 2001 book For Freedom & Honour included the story of two Royal Artillery gunners killed on South Ronaldsay when the breech of their gun exploded during an air raid on Orkney in April 1940.  Recent research using war diaries of Anti-Aircraft units that served here held in the National Archives in Kew has revealed details of the death of another Royal Artillery gunner during an air raid on Orkney on 26th June 1941.  The story of the death of Bombardier Donald Walls of Alloa when a rocket he fired exploded prematurely, and its link to the death of paratrooper Kevin Mulligan in Afghanistan in 2009, can be read by downloading the page using the link below.
