S/12231 Private John Sutherland of 8th Seaforths and Flotta

Today is the centenary of the death of John Sutherland of Flotta, one of two Orcadians killed on 22nd August 1917 serving in 8th Seaforth Highlanders during the Battle of Passchendaele.  John was one of three brothers who all served on the Western Front.  The youngest, William Sutherland, died on 12th October 1916 in the Battle of the Somme. John probably also served in the closing stages of the fighting there, also at Arras in the Spring of 1917.  He died in desperate fighting by 15th (Scottish) Division on Frezenberg Ridge, where 9th (Scottish) Division also fought a few weeks later.  A Celtic Cross memorial was inaugurated at Frezenberg in 2007, to remember Scotland's great sacrifice there.  The Sutherland brothers' story can be downloaded as a pdf from the Flotta website section, or direct using the link below.
