Recycling Centre Services

Asbestos Waste

Please note that Bonded Asbestos (generally corrugated roofing sheets) can only be disposed of at Bossack Recycling Centre, Tankerness. All Bonded Asbestos MUST be wrapped securely in plastic sheeting or placed in sealed bags. All packages or bags of asbestos should be to such a size and weight that they can be easily handled by two persons. This also applies to Bonded Asbestos collected by the Council from domestic properties as a special collection.

Please note that larger quantities (over six sheets) will only be accepted at Bossack Recycling Centre if they are pre-booked with us.

Other types of asbestos which pose a greater health risk will not be accepted by Orkney Islands Council and should only be handled and disposed of via a Specialist Contractor.

Garden Waste

There is a special skip for garden waste at the recycling centres. This is shredded and composted to make a soil conditioner – so please do not mix concrete, stone, metal or plastic in with your weeds and prunings.

Soil conditioner is now available from Bossack Recycling Centre, Tankerness and occasionally from other recycling centres.  Please contact Development and Infrastructure on telephone: (01856) 886367 to check on availability.  Members of the public can pick up soil conditioner free of charge, there may however be a loading fee if larger quantities are required.

Height Restrictions

Please note that height restriction barriers of 2 metres are in place at all Recycling Centres and are permanently lowered, vehicles below this height will continue to gain access to the site with no difficulties. Any householders who wish to dispose of their own domestic waste using a large van or truck should contact Development and Infrastructure on Telephone: 01856 886367 to make arrangements for the barrier to be raised. This action has been taken due to persistent misuse of the facility by Commercial Traders.
