ORKNEY ZEROWASTE YARD is YOUR local, community-run, re-use and recycling centre. We want your unwanted goods - we offer a ONE-STOP-DROP for your unwanted but reusable goods and materials, so that others can make use of them. Please SKIP THE TIP and bring things to us - we're extremely grateful for any contributions.

We take.all sorts of things, from textiles to household stuff, gardening gear and toys - other than prohibited or dangerous items, you name it, we'll deal with it! And you can take away anything you want in exchange for a donation - we like to charge as little as reasonably practical to cover our costs.

Here's some of the stuff that's passed through the yard lately - we don't have a list because there's just too much of it, and it comes and goes, sometimes within minutes!

By collecting smal donations we can keep the YARD going - and you can keep finding useful items and saving money. Every penny raised goes straight back into the ongoing running of the project. We also use the donations you give us to run recycling workshops and events.

If we can't take your item, we'll find a way to help you rehome it - we work in partnership with Restart Orkney and many other local charities, and if we find we can't sell or keep things, we rcycle them at OIC skips.

In winter the YARD is open on Saturdays from 10am to 3pm - drop in for a chat and a cuppa!

If you have an enquiry or can't get to the site and want to reserve an item, please email - orkneyzerowasteyard@gmail.com

Our long term goals for the YARD are to become an integral part of the community, and to:

  • Maintain a wishlist of items wanted and on offer
  • Increase local recycling knowledge by finding solutions to our recycling needs with our local partners.
  • Work closely with all local recycling organisations
  • Decrease the material deposited at in Civic Amenity Sites needing disposed by OIC
  • Increase the re-use of good items, reducing import transport costs and fuel.
  • Encourage a culture of re-use and recycling in the local community.
  • Encourage creativity and innovation in re-use.
  • Contribute to schools / education projects.
  • Create new volunteering opportunities within the local community.

We also work with LOVE YOUR CLOTHES and LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE projects supported by Zero Waste Scotland.

Maybe we can turn your old items into something new and give them a new lease of life - like these stools?

You'll find us at Garson Industrial Estate in Stromness, just beyond the Civic Amenity Site. Drive past the CAS, and take the next turning left. We are the second site on the left – the one with the caravan and the container.

Official opening from left to right: Andy Bowman (OZ volunteer co-ordinator), Jenni Kakkonen (OZ volunteer), Sarah De Rees (our first Site Manager), Alan Dundas (OZ Treasurer) and Councillor James Stockan

The YARD opened in January 2011 with a launch event in August - when our gates were officially opened :)

We always need help to run the site - if you would like to get involved in any aspects of this project, we would really love to hear from you and get you involved. Help is needed in many forms – from sorting items donated, keeping records, arranging events and publicity, and many other tasks. Come along to the site or email us on orkneyzerowasteyard@gmail.com

How are we funded?

Orkney Zerowaste is delighted to have received grants to set up the project from: Awards for All, LEADER, and the OIC's Community Development Fund. Current funding comes from donations, sales and our own activities, and Zero Waste Scotland supports our team and volunteers to deliver recycling projects and educational events on site. Support from all these organisations - and great volunteers - allow us to continue this important work.

Orkney Zerowaste is on Facebook - like us and get regular updates.
