STROMNESS REGATTA 2018

There was a great turnout for the annual Stromness Regatta which took place on Saturday, 14 July. The weather was generally kind to us with a light wind initially but increasing later. We were able to hold racing outside Stromness Harbour during a strong ebb tide. Twenty-seven boats took part, comprising four yachts, five yoles, twelve snipes, a 505, a laser and four catamarans.

Two races were held. The first had separate starts for yachts, yoles, snipes, mixed centreboards and catamarans. The second had separate starts for yachts, yoles, allcomer dinghies and catamarans. The prizes for the first three in each race were generously sponsored by Highland Park and greatly appreciated by all the successful sailors.

After racing everyone transferred to Stromness Golf Club for refreshments followed by the Prizegiving. Commodore James Burgon welcomed everyone and announced the winners. The prizes were presented by Graham Bruce of Highland Park.

There were too many people involved in putting on the event to mention individually. In brief, James Burgon expressed our heartfelt thanks to the competitors, Highland Park, the starters, the owners and crews of the support boats, those who loaned equipment and donated raffle prizes, Stromness Golf Club, those who made the soup and sandwiches and those who set it all out, the bar staff and all the Stromness SC members and friends who were involved in preparing for and running the event.
