Photography Group One - Nov 2016

by Tim Wright - 17:34 on 23 November 2016

Eleven of us met at the Palace at Birsay on an icy but sunny and dry morning. Some went off along the shore looking for birds and saw lots of Purple Sandpipers. Others walked out to the Brough, past many sun bathing seals, across the causeway to the lighthouse. There a pod of 20 or more Dolphins went past, easily visible through binoculars but much more difficult to catch on a camera. Back at the Palace we all met up and went to Hilary's house for soup and sandwiches and very nice it was too. Many thanks Hilary for the use of your excellent occasional Cafe !

Photos from the last meeting at Olav's Wood were perused. As was expected, the almost tame Robin featured heavily, in one photo almost being squashed by someone's foot. Other pictures included some lovely Rose Hips, very autumnal leaves in the burn running through the wood and an excellent photo of a Gold Crest. The spookiest photo was of the path through the conifer plantation that looked like it might be home to the Big Bad Wolf. An excellent series of photos, so well done to all.

The project was a photo for a Christmas card. Some members had done the whole mock up of a Christmas card, with one having added glitter! Other subjects were the tame Robin again, deer in snow, some stained windows and religious themes, the Poppy Window, a variety of pictures taken in Shearer's shop plus one amusing one by the leader that stole the show. As some of you may get it as a real card, it is not included. Great work by all and some lucky people are going to get very special cards this year.

The next meeting is Dec 7th at 10.30 am meeting at the car park in Finstown, opposite the grave yard. It is planned to take lunch at the Waterside Cafe but all will depend on the forecast nearer the time. The project is "Ice/ Stone" one or other or both if the weather gets cold.

The January meeting will be  on Wednesday 25th 2017 (sorry I forgot I will be away on 18th Jan) in the computer room at Dounby School. Four people will present short talks, 20 mins, max 50 slides, on Russia, South Africa, New York and the group's trip to Inverary. Anyone wanting help to put it on Power Point, let me know and we can get together before the day and to do so.

See you in 2 weeks, Tim.
