Music Appreciation
by Angela - 11:19 on 07 December 2017
The U3A music group mini report of our December the 4 th meeting
This meeting was a very special one because ,as well as just listening ,we
participated in carol singing and HAND BELL RINGING lead by Varerie-
We had always hoped to have some input by ourselves but apart from an odd
occasion,we had not been able to manage it ,but we now have a very
knowledgable member who generously gives of her talents.
The first half of the morning was spent on listening to chosen items connected to
our theme-Seasonal Events in Winter-
Amongst the selection were
Gareth Flett-Fior a Magne-This is a variation on the Hymn of St Magnus and
Gareth’s own perspective on the story-
Gareth is a very talented Kirkwall Grammer school student and we first heard it
the previous day in a wonderful concert given by the Orkney Camerata-the
Festival Singers and students from the Grammer school-the main piece being
Benjamin Britten”s St Nicholas-
We also listened to Britten”s a Ceremony of Carols-Mahlers Ressurection
Symphony,Bach Christmas Oratorio-The Holly and the Ivy-sung by Laudamus-.
After refreshments we had a handbell ringing session of carols-I don’t think any
of us had rang before-but we were left ,after the “taster” ,with the hope of having
the chance to try again!
Following that, we sang a few carols to Valerie”s piano accompaniment-She then
played some Bach ,both on the spinet and the same piece on the piano-in order to
compare-
We come to music group to learn and enjoy-we did both in abundance-
We meet the first Monday morning of each month-( usually-next meeting being
the exception-)
The next meeting is on the 8 th January in Orphir-
10-30 a.m.
We welcome anyone who wishes to join-
Angela
