Stromness at War

April - September 2011

When war was declared on the 3rd  September 1939 Stromness found itself thrust into the heart of the storm.  Soon it seemed that everyone in the streets was wearing a uniform and hotels and private houses were commandeered to house this new influx of military personnel.

Stromness was the first  port  of  call for troops arriving in Orkney, which made it a target for the Luftwaffe.  The entire defences for Orkney, including the vital naval base at Scapa Flow, were co-ordinated from Stromness.

Stars of screen and theatre performed at the newley built Garrison Theatre;  many having endured a rough crossing of the Pentland Firth before stepping ashore in Stromness.

This exhibition looks at life in wartime Stromness, using first hand accounts where available.
