EGILSAY REMEMBERS - 11 November 2018

The Egilsay Community gathered just before 11am at the War Memorial in the grounds of St Magnus Church Egilsay- listening to the BBC broadcast from the Cenotaph in Whitehall London on a car radio waiting for the salute that signals the start of two minutes silence. Followed by the laying of the Egilsay wreath by the youngest member of our community Amber Craigie.

The names of the Egilsay fallen and the poem 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae were read.

Amber Craigie assisted by David Basford Chair of Egilsay Community Association

'In FLanders Fields' by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

between the crosses, row on row,

that mark our place; and in the sky

the larks, still bravely singing, fly.

Scarce heard among the guns below

-

We Are The Dead. Short days ago

we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow.

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

in Flanders fields

-

Take up our quarrel with the foe

to you from failing hands we throw

the torch, be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

we shall not sleep, though poppies grow

in Flanders Fields
