Mystery tour - East Mainland

Lesley driving today:

The first outing of the year took the form of a 'Mystery Tour'.

It was a mystery to me up until the weekend before! I (Lesley) picked everyone up and we headed out of Stromness by 10am.

Our tour started by heading through to Kirkwall, then out through Tankerness and past the airport. We took the left turn shortly after the airport and headed past Bossock. This route took us out through the “back of Tankerness” as I’ve called it since I was peedie. We didn’t stop in at Sheila Fleets this day but carried on past and came past the cemetery and onto the main road again at the Community Centre.  We took a left and headed for Deerness but turned right, up past St Andrews School, and onto the Hurtiso Road, then left at the memorial cross and to the first barrier.  This took us to the Italian Chapel, where we stopped and most of the passengers went in for a wee look.

Onwards from there to Robertson’s in St Margaret’s Hope for a delicious lunch. Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy their food and the portion sizes were more than adequate. The owners/staff couldn’t do enough for us. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch break.

We stayed in “The Hup” and went a peedie look to the Marengo Garden, well laid out and beautiful to look at.

Next stop, Hoxa Gallery and Tapestry. What a fab place with lots of beautiful rugs, pictures, prints etc. Friendly folk too.

On our way back through Burray we stopped at the Fossil Centre for a mid afternoon cuppa and then moseyed along the road back to Stromness.
