Willie driving today:
Bonnie day, mainly one short shower mid afternoon and another on the way home through Orphir. Practically calm and sunny on way across – several of the fitter folk out on upper deck of ferry.
Left Lyness, travelled south to Brims, some visited Lifeboat Museum, rest sat on bench in he sun. Drove up to top of Brims to take in view of Pentland Firth, Skerries, Duncansby Head, Stroma, Dunnett and towards Thurso and beyond (a lot of Orkney people who have travelled South have no idea about Caithness, other than Scrabster – Latheron).
Went doon via Longhope Village, East Martello Tower, Osmondwall Cemetery – stopped briefly to see Lifeboat memorial – did not go to Cantick Lighthouse – I had been the previous day with car and road is now terribly potholed! Timed arrival at Stroma Bank for lunch. Pretty well served, good fish and chips and willingly provided alternative for one who does not like fish (I phoned in advance). Fine selection of homebakes, tea and coffee.
Had a look up past Melsetter House (road again badly potholed and privately owned, like Cantick (exNLB) so never likely to be repaired by OIC). Drove back up to Rackwick – parked at back of the Glen to get view for those not able to walk but had to clear off due to midgies.
Heading back to Hoy we stopped to speak to the RSPB, and most got out and saw the eagle chick via telescope.
Drove down Moaness via Kirk and Hostel, turned and went south via lower road, stopping about Scad Head for view across flow. Then onto the ice cream/coffee shop. Most, who were able, came in for ice cream and Brenda and other fit ones took out ice cream to those staying in the bus.
Returned to Hoy Head about 15 minutes before sailing time.
