u3a Walking Groups 1&2 - Birsay - 28 November, 2024

by Tim Wright - 07:54 on 29 November 2024

Sixteen of us met at the Palace in Birsay this morning. It was a combined walk with Ellie's Group. The original idea had been to walk around Kirkwall and then go somewhere for lunch. However the forecast was so good for a late November day in Orkney that it was decided to have a cliffside walk with minimal busy road walking. What an excellent walk we had with no wind and sun but coolish. The muscles were soon warmed up on the road out to the point Car Park at the Brough. Then it was along the cliffs past the site of the much lamented Whale Bone Cross to the Geo. Where is the Whale Bone Cross? It is safe but going to be displayed somewhere inside. One local suggestion was that it was going to be replaced with a Replica but can we wait that long until a whale finally beaches itself? Pondering these questions we turned right at the Geo, noting quite a lot of Fulmars on the cliffs and headed down the road back to the Boat Nousts. Then it was on around the point, back along the road, with rather more traffic than earlier, to the Royal Residence. None of them were at home so we bought our hot pies at the shop and sat on the walls in the sun having our Banquet with Lemon Drizzle Cake and Mince pies to finish off with, baked by Ellie . So a lovely late Autumn day, so rare in Orkney until two come along at once like busses, but  enjoyed by everyone .

The next walk will be for my Group on Friday 17th Jan 2025. I will remind you one week before and location and time will be 2 days before so plans can be made as to the best place to go (or not ) depending on the forecast.

Keep moving,

Tim
