u3a Photography Group - Stromness Museum - 19 February, 2025

by Tim Wright - 12:15 on 20 February 2025

Twelve of us met at the Stromness Museum today at 11 am, which is their opening time although I didn't realise that! It was just as well we were inside as it was a cold day with Gale force winds and not a time to be visiting Aikerness. Lots of items caught the eye in the Museum from the Fleet Scuttling to wonderful old model ships in glass cases. John Rae and the Hudson Bay Company featured heavily as did the Whaling. Upstairs the bird collection is extensive. What is interesting is that some of the birds commonly seen at a distance like Ravens, Cormorants and Great Northern Divers are really large when see close to. Lots of artefacts had been brought back from the far corners of the Earth by adventurous Stromessians. There was more than enough to photograph.

Then it was down to the Pier Cafe for lunch and hot drinks to keep the chill out. Many thanks to Barbara for fixing our reservation at the Cafe. Discussion about the Project for the month settled upon "Wind and Waves" or "Wind or Waves", whichever suited. Walking back to the car there were lots of both so some members will already have submissions to put forward.

The next meeting will be Wednesday 19th March, probably at Aikerness if the weather is OK.

In the meantime, Keep clicking,

Tom
