Why I Am Voting Yes, by Fiona MacInnes

I am voting Yes because we deserve to get the government we elect. My twenties were spent under the Tory government, which Scotland’s voters rejected repeatedly while Margaret Thatcher destroyed the lives of many young people. For 18 long years we languished in unemployment and low paid work, and watched opportunities disappear from our grasp. It was a time of gross unfairness to young and old. Proud family men lost work at big industrial sites like Ravenscraig and scrambled for the few low paid jobs, where they had to work 70 hours or more a week to make ends meet. Many people did not survive those times and became trapped on benefits, hopelessness and drug addiction. That time sowed the seed of the greed-based society that we have now sunk into.
My Yes vote will be to ensure we are never disenfranchised so blatantly again, and can instead work to build a fairer country for all, weak and strong together.
