A prominent Liberal Democrat is the latest convert to the Yes cause, saying he ‘can’t think of a single good reason to vote No.’
Alan MacRae stood in the Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch constituency in the Scottish Parliament elections in 2011.
He has spent years working for the Lib Dems in the Highlands alongside two important No campaigners from his party - Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander and former leader Charles Kennedy.
Alan, who is a 43-year-old teacher at Portree High School, said: ‘To be honest, I’ve always been an independence supporter. I was always more comfortable with Yes than No. I do think it is the more outward looking stance to take.
‘I was into federalism - proper full on federalism - but that was never really on the table, even for my own party who have suddenly just started mentioning it.
‘A lot of it is to do with the No campaign to be honest, it has been so bad. I can’t think of a single good reason to vote No.’
He said he felt that the Westminster system ‘lazy’, and that the anti-EU culture found in the south of England was ‘quite distasteful’.
Mr McRae is among a number of senior Liberal Democrat figures who have joined the campaign for an independent Scotland, including former party chief executive Andy Myles and former treasurer Denis Robertson Sullivan.
Yes Scotland Chief Executive Blair Jenkins welcomed Alan to Yes, saying: ‘This is yet more evidence that people of all parties and none are seeing that Scotland can, should and must be independent.
‘It is Alan, rather than his Lib Dem colleagues such as Charles Kennedy and Danny Alexander, who is staying true to his party’s tradition of real and meaningful self-determination for Scotland.
‘We look forward to Alan joining us as we work to put Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands during these critical last few weeks of the campaign.’
