The doyen of the Scottish independence movement said today she’ll be voting Yes on Thursday  - so her grandchildren can live in a better and fairer country.

Political legend Winnie Ewing turned the Scottish political world upside down when she won the Hamilton by-election for the SNP in 1967.

Her slogan during the campaign that led to her stupendous victory was: “Stop the world - Scotland wants to get on.”

As its oldest and most respected member, she also had the honour of taking the chair and reconvening the Scottish Parliament at its historic first meeting in 1999.

Today Winnie, who is now retired from active politics, said: "I will be casting my vote of course for Yes with great pleasure, because I've waited all my life for a meaningful vote and this is a meaningful vote for every older person.

"Make it Yes because there is so much at stake, a fairer, democratic Scotland which we all
want. “

Winnie continued: "I'm old enough to appreciate having grandchildren, so I'm in a position to realise that it's vital for them to grow up in a fair society where their aspirations are listened to and where they're afforded the chance that they need.

“That's what I hope the young persons in this country will get in a democratic Scotland."

Dennis Canavan, Chairman of the Yes Scotland Advisory Board, said: “The whole of Scotland has huge respect for Winnie - she was fighting for a Yes before many of today’s voters were even born.

“She has been one of the biggest figures in Scottish politics during the last half century and her efforts have helped to bring us to where we are today.

“We’re delighted that Winnie has come out publicly to urge a Yes vote not just for people of her generation, but for her grandchildren, who of course will benefit most from the gains of independence. As a grandfather myself, I fully agree with that.”
