The Orkney Youth Music Forum AGM will be held at St Magnus Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th November 2012.

Live music will be provided by young traditional fiddler, Graham Low accompanied by guitarist, Jack Kirkpatrick.

The Orkney Youth Music Forum was started in June 2009 and is based on the aims of the Youth Music Initiative. The OYMF is working to raise awareness of existing musical groups, identify areas for development, promote inclusion, encourage collaborative working among genres and sectors, advertise funding opportunities and share local resources.

The aims of the Orkney Youth Music Forum are to improve awareness of and to coordinate youth music activities in the statutory, private and freelance areas of provision of all styles of music and to facilitate collaboration, joint learning and the introduction of new ideas.
Members of the OYMF are drawn from youth music providers such as teachers, development workers, tutors, freelancers, directors as well as young people. The age category for those young people that the Forum will cater for will be 25 years and under.

During the initial setting-up period, Gemma McGregor worked as Coordinator of the OYMF – a post which was created by Creative Scotland through the Youth Music Initiative for the purpose of developing a youth music forum and for researching the particular needs of young people in Orkney. During this time, Gemma compiled a Music Service Directory, which lists all of the musical groups and activities in all genres available in Orkney. During 2011, Gemma carried out research that was published in December in a report entitled, “Music Provision for the Under 25s in Orkney”.

OYMF is led by a committee, chaired by Glenys Hughes, and quarterly meetings include live music and interviews with different Orkney music groups.
