Victory Day at Lyness
Today, 9th May, is a national holiday in Russia and there is great celebration throughout the country to mark the hard won victory against Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War that cost the USSR about 20 million dead. Representatives of the Royal British Legion, the Royal Navy Association and Orkney Islands Council met the Lord Lieutenant, Tony Trickett and other Hoy people in Lyness this morning to hold a short service there. The Scottish Consul General of the Russian Federation, Timofey Kunitskiy, laid a wreath at the Arctic Convoys Memorial to recognise the important role they played in achieving final victory over Germany.
