Great War Burns Supper

Last week's The Orcadian carried the story of a Burns Supper celebrated by 13 Scottish Royal Engineer soldiers in France in January 1919.  Photos of the two Orcadians there have been added to the website portrait photo galleries.  Dr David Marwick gave permission to show the photo of his grandfather, William L Marwick, who became Deputy Postmaster in Kirkwall.  Wendy Barker gave permission to show the photo of her great uncle, George S Robertson, who became Postmaster in Stromness and also town Provost.  As signallers they served together in the signal company of Third Army HQ, which moved to Flixécourt, 15 miles SW of Doullens, on 5th December 1918.  W L Marwick's photo is in the website Kirkwall section, but can be seen direct using the link below.  Dod Robertson's photo is in the website Stromness section, although he was born on Sanday and W L was born on Rousay.
