On Sunday the first of the series of events in Scotland planned to mark the centenary of the Great War took place in Edinburgh. When the Drumhead Service on the Castle Esplanade started the weather was threatening, but significant rain held off during the impressive service and the procession down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Park that followed. The heavy rain that started shortly after the participants arrived at Holyrood Park was more reminiscent of the terrible conditions in the later stages of the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele than of the 1914 sunny weather and optimism at the start of the Great War - probably a suitable message to mark Scotland's heavy suffering in the conflict.  A brief account and couple of photos of the proceedings can be seen using the link below.
