The story of the destroyer HMS Cossack setting free British sailors taken prisoner by the German ship Graf Spee during World War 2 is fairly well known.  The cruiser HMS Highflyer set free British sailors taken prisoner by the German armed merchant cruiser Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse exactly 100 years ago today during the Great War.
