The weather was cool, but dry and calm, for the well over a hundred participants in today's 75th Anniversary Memorial Service for the sinking of the battleship HMS Royal Oak in Scapa Flow. There were strong Royal Navy, Survivors' Association, OIC and Royal British Legion Branch delegations to participate in the services in the Scapa Garden of Remembrance and at the nearby wreck site. The dedications this year, as well as rembering the 834 sailors killed in the battleship's sinking by U-47 in 1939, also included the 29 of the total 425 Royal Oak survivors who lost their lives in subsequent Royal Navy service later in the long war that followed.
