The now annual service at Lyness to remember those who sailed from there on "the worst journey in the world", to escort wartime convoys to Russia, was held this morning.  One of the visitors attending was Margaret, one of the four daughters of Orcadian merchant seaman Jim Harcus.  His log of one of two Arctic Convoy journeys on the Liberty ship "Ocean Faith" was donated to Kirkwall Royal British Legion last year, when used as the basis of his story told by Craig Taylor in The Orcadian in September.  Jim survived two convoy trips, but his younger brother Robert died when the destroyer HMS Mahratta was sunk in an Arctic Convoy during March 1944.  Their stories are available as Word documents in the Kirkwall section of the website.  A couple of photos and brief description of today's service at Lyness can be downloaded as a web page using the link below.
