Today is the centenary of the death at Festubert in northern France of Sergeant Donald MacLeod, while serving in 4th Cameron Highlanders. Donald was born in Portree on Skye, but had worked two years in Stromness Post Office when he mobilized as a Territorial at the start of the Great War. Donald is not listed on the Stromness War Memorial, but his death, with photo as a soldier, was reported in the Roll of Honour section of The Orcadian in 1915. Donald MacLeod was one of the Portree Territorials whose story in 4th Camerons' attack at Festubert was broadcast on BBC 2 Scotland on 24th March this year, under the title "The Machine Gun and Skye's Band of Brothers". A Word document with Donald's biography has been added to the Stromness section of the website, while it can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
