Today is the centenary of the death from wounds of George Seatter of Westray. He was the fourth Orcadian Canadian to die in the Second Battle of Ypres, when the Germans first used gas on the Western Front and the Canadians endured a tough introduction to warfare there. The Library and Archives of Canada started to digitize and make available online the service records of 640,000 Canadian Great War soldiers last year. The project will only be completed in 2018 (has reached the surname letter D), so George Seatter's service record will probably not be available to provide full details of his war service for at least a year. His story, based on other sources, has been added as a Word document to the Westray section of the website and can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
