Today is the centenary of the death, from a sniper's bullet on Gallipoli, of William Dyce. William Irvine and his brother, born in Kirkwall, had taken the name of his stepfather, when his widowed mother re-married and moved to Edinburgh.  William had volunteered to serve abroad with the Royal Scots, doing so for just five weeks before was killed, aged only 19. This was reported in The Orcadian and William's name is recorded on Kirkwall War Memorial.
