The heavy fighting at Cape Helles on Gallipoli on 28th June 1915 took the life of the first Stronsay service man to die in the Great War.  William Brownlie, the younger son of the Stronsay UF minister, had joined a Royal Scots Territorial battalion after finishing his schooling at George Watson's College.  His death on Gallipoli became the first of 33 during the Great War to be commemorated on the Stronsay War Memorial.  A Word document biography of William Brownlie has been added to the Stronsay section of the website, or it can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
