10716 Private Ian Edward Andrew Merrilees of Harray
Newly qualified school teacher Archibald Merrilees and his young wife Letitia arrived in Orkney in 1886. During the fourteen years that the family lived here, their five sons and two daughters were born. Today is the centenary of the death, aged only 18, of the second youngest son, Ian Merrilees. He died of wounds in a German field hospital, two days after taken prisoner during a subsidiary attack to the Battle of Loos.
