Today is the centenary of the death of David Stuart Spence, the last of thirteen Orcadians who died in the Gallipoli campaign (with two others, the sons of Orcadian parents). Stuart's story has been available for 10 years as a Word document on this website, now also as a pdf. However, he is one of three Orcadians commemorated on the Helles Memorial whose biographies are also shown via the link below on the WW1 Cemeteries website. It has biographies of several other Orcadians, while the photo section of cemeteries and memorials (both Turkish and Allied) on Gallipoli were nearly all provided by myself after two visits in 2005. Stuart also "gets a mention" on page 3 of Jeremy Paxman's book Great Britain's Great War, when he writes that those who died at Gallipoli included "bakers' sons from the Orkneys .......".
