11856 Corporal William Petrie of South Ronaldsay

Today is the centenary of the death in Flanders of William Petrie of Hoxa, South Ronaldsay.  He was killed during a fierce "daily hate" artillery bombardment of the trenches 1st Scots Guards were holding near Ypres (now Ieper).  The biography of William added today as a Word document to the website has been extracted from the book on the South Ronaldsay war dead, "For Freedom & Honour", with George Esson's permission.  A photo has been added of William's grave, taken by John Sutherland, who lives with his Belgian wife Marianne in Ieper and represents Royal British Legion, Scotland there.  A pdf copy of William Petrie's story and photos can be downloaded direct using the link below.
