Today is the centenary of the death in France of Peter Fotheringhame, one of the seven sons of a Sanday farmer.  Peter had emigrated in 1911 with his brother William to Western Australia.  Peter enlisted in April 1915 into Reinforcements for 11th Battalion AIF, which he joined on Gallipoli for the attempt in August to break out of Anzac.  His health broke down in the heat and stress, but he recovered in time to travel to France with 11th Battalion.  Peter was killed by the "daily hate" shell-fire on 26th May 1916, while his unit was settling in to trench warfare near the French-Belgian border.  He was the first Orcadian Australian soldier killed in France.  His story is available as a Word document in the Sanday section of the website, or can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
