Second Lieutenant James Charles Scarth of Firth

The second major British attack of the Battle of the Somme on 14th July 1916 led to a grim fight to capture the village of Longueval and the adjacent Delville Wood in the German 2nd Position.  One of the two young Orcadian officers killed during the first day of fighting that lasted nearly a week was James Scarth, a subaltern in the 7th Seaforth Highlanders.  His biography has been added as a Word document to the Firth section of the website, while it can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
