In a year when the Orkney community has played a significant part in the special centenary commemorations for tragic naval events of the Great War, the focus today switched to the familiar annual commemoration of a great naval tragedy of World War 2.  The Royal Navy's Northern Diving Group was joined by local service and veteran contingents for a service at Scapa to mark the 77th Anniversary of the sinking of HMS Royal Oak in the second month of World War 2, with the loss of 834 sailors.  The Flotta Terminal, now operated by Repsol Sinopec, again kindly provided a passenger launch to allow a visit to the wreck of the battleship.  A brief account of the commemorative service can be seen as a web page using the link below.
