Today is the centenary of the death in the Battle of the Somme of George Laird of Kirkwall.  George was killed by shell-fire when 38th Canadian Battalion moved into the trenches near Courcelette on 27th October 1916 and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial in France.  His story has been added this evening as a Word document in the Kirkwall section of the website and can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
