Accessible Places in Orkney
Each month we are going to highlight some points on the Accessibility of places in Orkney. The award winning Pier Arts Centre in Stromness re-opened in July 2007 following a two year, £4.5 million Lottery funded redevelopment of its buildings and facilities. Through the refurbishment effort has been made to ensure the facility is accessible to all visitors. There are many features in the museum which are examples of good practice. There is a lift with audio and visual signs. Braille is used and clear lettering is used in signs throughout the building. For visitors who might find the journey through the gallery tiring, there are wheelchairs available to borrow. There are seats throughout and many places to rest and look at the wonderful displays. It is well worth a visit – enjoy the accessible building and the art! Visitors should note that the nearest accessible car parking space is located near Julias in the public car parking at the pier head. www.pierartscentre.com http://www.pierartscentre.com/contacts.html takes you to the contacts page if you would like more information before your visit.
