Westray Regatta 1999

The day dawned most inauspiciously with thick fog, but by the time the crews had had a magnificent buffet lunch at the Pierowall Hotel the day was clear with a fine south east breeze making conditions perfect for sailing.

A total of 39 craft took part and the Westray Club is very indebted to the sailing clubs who support it so well.

At the end of the day's sailing the trophies were given out by Mrs. Barnett, recently appointed to the managership of Westray Processors' factory.

A very successful dance concluded the day's activities, the music being provided by the band of John P. Drever and Co.

Kirkwall Regatta 1999

Conditions were excellent for Orkney Sailing Club's annual regatta held on Saturday August 7 with a moderate to fresh east north east wind with clear bright conditions.

There was a good turn out of boats, 32 in all, despite the fact that no Snipes were able to come through from Stromness and most of the yachts, including several dinghy sailors as crew, had already departed to see the tall ship's race in Shetland. An Olympic course was set for the dinghies despite a large liner anchoring on the location of the wing mark. The yachts and the cats sailed longer courses around Scargun and a buoy off Thieves Holm.

The impressive array of trophies for the regatta and the season's points series were presented at the prizegiving ceremony held later in the Girnel. The Commodore thanked all those who had given their services and helped to make the day run so smoothly. This was followed by a very successful, enjoyable and well supported dance, the music being provided by the Wyre Band and the buffet by the ladies of the club.

Holm Regatta 1999

A record of 17 snipes at Holm Regatta for the club's 50th anniversary, 45 boats took part in the annual event.

Usual class racing took part with Snipes from Holm and Stromness, Skiffs from Westray, Mirrors and Catamarans from Longhope and various other classes from Kirkwall.

The highlight of the day was a veteran Snipe race when 12 past veterans took to the water some with original crews and most with their original boat. Five home made rafts entered the raft race which spectators enjoyed. Thanks have to be extended to various people who helped make the day such a success.

Rescue boats, dinner ladies, time keepers, Longhope Lifeboat, Deerness Ladies Lifeboat Guild, J. Tait starter for veterans race, Harry Russell for taking photos, shops and individuals for donating raffles and donations, our two local lassies for the first class buffet, Wyre Band for music, Lilian, Sheelagh and Alan for bar duties. To all thank you!

Kemp Cup 1999

Orkney Sailing Club held their last major event of the '99 season on Saturday September 11, with the racing of the Kemp Cup and the other associated races of the day.

The regatta being held late in the season has a habit of being a day of hard racing and sailing and this day was no exception with fresh winds coupled with poor visibility.

First off were the yachts competing for the Centenary Cup on the outside course around the Thieves Holm buoy and Scargun. First home and the victorious contestant was Gambler (G. Ratter) with Kerry Lass (M. Cooper) second and New Dawn (J. Hinkley) third.

The Baikie Cup, the second yacht race was held after a break for lunch. The only yacht to finish was Kerry Lass.

Longhope Regatta 1999

Longhope Sailing Club held their annual regatta last Saturday with a total of 26 boats participating, varying from Mirrors to Hobie Cats.

The weather was perfect for what turned out to be an excellent day's sailing, with fresh east south easterly winds and no rain.

The morning race started with the Mirrors on a short course covering part of Longhope Bay and the North Bay in a figure of eight. There were two Mirrors that had to pull out due to rigging problems which left only one to complete the course.

Snipes and Mixed Centreboards followed the Mirrors and they were to head for Myre Bay then across to Grays Point, then head back to the short course in North Bay and back through the gate, this also making a figure of eight course. Four boats from this race had to retire.

Lastly the catamarans set off for the same course with four Hobie Cats and four Yachting Worlds taking part.

It was fine to see the older Yachting Worlds competing against the newer Hobie Cats, with both models showing great speed at times. Rip Tide and Alleycat came in very close behind the Hobies with the Tern and Spindrift following behind, with Spindrift coming in a peedie bit late!

After the first race everyone set off for some lunch and light refreshments laid on by Lydia and Judith. This turned out to be a first class meal.

In the afternoon the Allcomers race started at 3pm, once again with the Mirrors starting off followed by the Mixed Centreboards and Catamarans.

The Mirrors completed the short course again but the remainder of the boats had to complete a figure of eight on the long course followed by the same on the short course and back through the gate.

On completion of the last race everyone gathered on the pier where this year's regatta queen, Amy Cameron, presented the cups and medals to the boat crews.

The commodore thanked everyone for taking part and supporting the club and a special vote of thanks was given to the rescue boat crews for giving excellent coverage throughout the day.

The Longhope Sailing Club would also like to thank the time- keepers for their help on the day and to Elf Marine, Billy Hill, Lydia and Judith and lastly the ferry crew, who pushed and pulled all weekend transporting the boats.

The very light winds and calm conditions made for a challenging competition at Saturday's regatta.

Finding the wind and making the most of it required skill. Spirits were high in the damp conditions. Sixteen visiting boats took part.
