Regatta 1978
Holm Regatta 1978
St. Mary's Bay at Holm was the setting for Holm Sailing Club's annual regatta held in near perfect conditions on Saturday July 29. A good sailing breeze with sunshine made a perfect picture for many visitors as some 43 boats in the usual classes competed for the various trophies.
Competition was keen and placings were continually changing, until in each case the lucky boat was first over the finish line.
Following a lively afternoon of sailing the company were entertained to dinner in the Community Centre, when Commodore, Mr. H. Johnston, in a few words thanked the visiting yachtsmen for their keen and sporting competition, the officials of Orkney Sailing Club for their assistance and organisation on the pier, the ever helpful members who had manned the rescue boats, who were fortunately not required, and last but not least the ladies who had cooked and served the meal.
He then invited Mrs. Elizabeth Sutherland to present the prizes.

B. Aim won the W. Rendall trophy for the top Snipe in Allcomers and Centreboard races.
Port to Port 1978
In fitful sunshine and with a light south easterly breeze, Holm Sailing Club sailed their annual Port to Port and Fara Cup Race on Sunday, August 13, when seven snipes took part, with messrs Norman Johnston and Eric Sutherland manning the accompaying two rescue boats.
Shortly after 2.30 p.m. Mr. Willie Laughton operated the starting signal and they were on their way to St. Margaret's Hope.
The Port to Port winner is the first Snipe to cross the line on reaching St. Margaret's Hope and the winner of the Fara Cup is the snipe which has the best aggregate time on the two legs - i.e. the race there and back again.
First over the line at St. Margaret's Hope was Teeack (skipper Eric McLennan) closely followed by Tyro (Bertie Johnston), Viking (Alfie Flett), Valhalla (Brian Aim), Firewood (Sinclair Muir), Kontiki (Martin Flett) and La Rocca (Raymond Aim).
After a short pause for a picnic tea they set off again on the homeward journey, the multi-coloured sails and hulls making a pretty picture in the evening sunshine.
This time Valhalla had a splendid two minute lead over his nearest rival Tyro, as he crossed the line at the finish with the others following in this order: Teeack, Viking, Kontiki, Firewood and La Rocca.
But it was Teeack which won the Port to Port race being the first over the line at St. Margaret's Hope and it was Teeack also which won the Fara Cup by the slender margin of only seventeen seconds from Tyro.. Unanimous verdict - a splendid afternoon's sailing.
The resulting times are as follows - the first number indicating the outward journey and the second the time to come home:
Place | Boat | Skipper | South | North | Overall |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Teeack | Eric McLennan | 1hr 34min 56sec | 1hr 19 min 0 sec | Total 2hr 53min 56sec |
2 | Tyro | Bertie Johnston | 1 35 48 | 1 18 25 | 2 54 13 |
3 | Viking | Alfie Flett | 1 39 0 | 1 19 06 | 2 58 06 |
4 | Valhalla | Brian Aim | 1 45 20 | 1 16 25 | 3 01 45 |
5 | Firewood | Sinclair Muir | 1 42 45 | 1 19 50 | 3 02 35 |
6 | Kontiki | Martin Flett | 1 45 20 | 1 19 35 | 3 4 55 |
7 | La Rocca | Raymond Aim | 1 49 50 | 1 21 05 | 3 10 55 |
