Longhope Regatta 2000

The first day in July saw the first of the regattas here in Orkney, with Longhope being first on the list. This year was to be quite special as there was an old yawl taking part which has been rebuilt practically from stem to stern.

The yawl in question is the Family Pride which belonged to Kevin Kirkpatrick’s grandfather from Brims and she looked magnificent both alongside the pier as well as in full sail whilst out in the Bay.

A total of 19 boats took part this year with nine of these being local boats. The winds were just right for a good sail with all the classes managing to keep fairly tight together throughout the course.

The morning race was a figure of eight course for all boats, once round. Again this year there was a very good turnout of rescue craft and always had the courses well covered- not that they had much to do on the day due to the good conditions- but it did give them time to take a few photos and savour the view of all the sail in the bay.

After an excellent lunch provided once again by Lydia and Judith at the recreation club, all the sailors proceeded back down the pier for the Allcomers race in the afternoon. This turned out to be twice round the course and once again the conditions were good with the wind threatening to fall away slowly as the afternoon progressed.

The three yachting worlds that returned to Longhope last year were the other old timers sailing on Saturday , and they are still going strong after over 30 years of sailing. Long may it continue.

A special mention must go to the crews that sailed from Stromness to take part and then sailed back to Stromness after the racing. The local boats hope to acknowledge their effort by a good turn out at Stromness Regatta.

Finally the club would like to thank once again the time keepers for all their hard work, their assistance throughout the day is invaluable.

Westray Regatta 2000

Orkney’s Sailors flock to Westray Regatta

A good day was had by all with fine weather and light winds. Fifty one boats took part coming from Kirkwall, Stromness and Holm among others.

During the regatta, the Westray sailing Club had a launching ceremony for their new rescue craft. Funding for the purchase of this vessel came from the Lottery Awards for All Scheme as well as Orkney Enterprise and Orkney Islands Council. Representing the OIC on the day was Councillor Stephen Hagan with Brian Kynoch representing Orkney Enterprise.

The dance afterwards was well attended with the well known ‘John P’s Band’ and up and coming new band ‘Tjalder’ providing a wide range of dance music which was much appreciated by those dancing.

Kirkwall Regatta 2000

Gale force winds disrupt racing at Kirkwall Regatta

Orkney Sailing Club held its annual regatta on Saturday August 5, with a total of 43 boats including visitors from Westray, Stromness and Holm taking part.

After the Commodore’s briefing on Hatston slip at 9am the starters embarked on the Jenny Lee and proceeded to the starting anchorage.

The first race for yachts started just a little late with four boats on the line. Gambler (George Ratter) won this race for the W. R. Tulloch and Sons’ Rose Bowl. Second was New Dawn (John Hinkley) followed by Kerry Lass (Mike Cooper).

Cobra (Magnus Bain) came first in the Snipe Class with Erma (Neil Foubister) second and Silver Fern (Dave Harcus third. First in the Wayfarer Class was Smyril (Jimmy Clouston), Hronn (Leyton Venables) took second with Viad (Les Town) third.

Due to some confusion, some of the Rocket class were disqualified , along with some others, for not going through the starting gate on the upwind leg. Ella (Harcus Hutchison) came out winner in this class with is brother Keith coming second in Auk.

Dog Woof (David Pottinger) took the honours in the Albacore class followed by Barbarian (Brian Pottinger) and Samara (Chris Irvine).

The Mixed Centreboards was won by Evil Edna (David Sabiston) with Best Kens (Leslie Tait second and Skellum (Ann Thorne-Large) third.

The J & W Tait Hobie 18 Cup was won by Banana Split (E. Tait) followed by the club boat, Dire Straits, skippered by Mike Holgate.

Our cadet sailors were sailing for the D. A. G. Kynoch Cup in the club Picos. After a keenly fought contest the eventual winner was David Clouston. The brother and sister team of Rachel and Matthew Butcher came second and third respectively.

After a break for a superb buffet prepared by the ladies it was off for the afternoon’s races. The yachts were first off and once again Gambler (G. Ratter) came first winning the Baikie Cup. Kerry Lass (M. Cooper) took second with Jigsaw (R. Moar) third.

The Jack Scott Quiche for skiffs was won by Puffin (M. Foulis) second was Alice (G. Rendall).

The Rendall Challenge Cup for Centreboards was won by Evil Edna (D. Sabsiton) with Smyril (J. Clouston) second and Cobra (M. Bain) third. The first snipe in the centreboard class was Cobra (M. Bain). Ella (H. Hutchison) won the Amazon Cup for the first Rocket in the centreboard class.

The long race for catamarans was won by Banana Split (E. Tait). Phoenix (G. Shearer) came second and Awesome, skippered by C. Drever took third.

In the juniors, once again D. Clouston took first. K. Tait came second and this time S. Craig was third. The wind had been changing all the time during this race and just as it was ending the wind became gale force and forced an end to the day’s racing.

Several boats capsized and had to be rescued by the four rescue boats (well, three) on the scene at the time.

The club is indebted to the Stromness Club, the Sea Cadets, and Messrs Miller and Harcus for providing their boats and services. The event could not go ahead without them.

It was rumoured that another rescue boat was coming from Skegness but it was last reported being used by the respective Vice Commodores of the Kirkwall and Stromness clubs to repaint the white lines between the two towns.

In the evening the prizes were presented by Mr. Hugh Ross, the area sales representative for Old Orkney Scotch Whisky, the sponsors of the Kirkwall Regatta, followed by a dance in the loft of the clubhouse.
