On Friday 29th June Throughout the
weekend The Croft and the Heritage
Centre will be open as usual; in addition
there’s a visit to the Lighthouse planned
to start at mid-day, but if you’re arriving
on the boat you should still have time to
join this if you come straight up to the
Scuthvie car-park. Phone 01857-600341
to book and to find out where to meet. 40
residents have signed up for the
Gardening Club’s ‘end-of-
the-road/verge-side planters’ this year, so
a drive around the island should be
punctuated by great splashes of colour at
regular intervals; 8 gardens will be open
to visitors during the afternoon as well;
click here to find out the house-names,
and pick up a map from a local shop or
Heilsa Fjold...
Bill McArthur’s Art Gallery will be
open, as well as Craft &/or Spinning
products and demonstrations at Brigend
2012 is the centenary of the tragic end to
Scott’s race to the South Pole.
Members of the present-day
British Antarctic Survey (BAS) will be
on Sanday, and they will
set up a modern-day pyramid tent with
authentic interior furnishings, along with
a display of contemporary photographs
of Antarctica to contrast with the black
and white images of Scott’s last
expedition. Please go to Heilsa Fjold to
see the exhibition.
In the evening, the Community
Association will be hosting a concert,
supper and dance featuring the first-time
visit to Sanday of the band No Soond.
Saturday 30th June 10 Gardens,
several art and craft and spinning studios
and displays, the Antarctic exhibition
and the model railway will all be open
from 10-12; and in the late morning
there’s a special concert for youngsters
in the Community Room – Dennis
Alexander’s Scotch Broth.
Youngsters
must be accompanied – all tickets are the
same price.
After lunch the inter-parish Football and
Netball competitions will begin at 2
p.m., and will be followed by the
colourful Fancy Dress and Floats Parade
(visitors encouraged to participate),
along with entries from the Saddle
Club’s horses and riders.
In the evening, the Antarctic band
Nunatak will open proceedings at the
Community Hall at 8 p.m.; they’ll be
followed by the Dennis Alexander’s
Songs, Stories and Downright Lies; One
year Older and Wiser. Bring your own
refreshments; be there early to secure a
table with your friends, and join in the
fun!
Sunday 1st July 6 gardens will be open
this morning, and the studios and
exhibitions. Come to the Community
Room at 1230 for an Antarctic
expedition snack (high-calorie,
low-volume) and drink, and for a talk
Dingle Days – Modern Life on the
Antarctic Peninsula. After that, we hope
plenty of folk will join in a Sports Club
fun-run – anything from a lap of the
track (only 300 metres) to the longer
road-run: it’s all in aid of the RNLI.
There will be plenty of other diversions
and stalls (including the RNLI
burger/hot-dog barbecue and an Italian
wooden flower stall),
and the return of
the Radio Sanday Rock the Bikeshed
Roadshow with live performances,
including members of Stromness Pipe
Band, and record requests. Contact Huw
or Sheena (600-441) if you’d like to
perform, or pick up a request form and
post your dedication message in the
boxes provided in the shops. At 4 p.m.
sharp, the Soulka Raffle will be drawn
and an original Bill McArthur Seascape
will be auctioned in aid of Soulka funds.
In the evening, relax and unwind at
Kettletoft with informal music sessions
from residents, from Nunatak, and
Dennis Alexander.
The 2011 Soulkas were helped
enormously by grants, which helped
us to keep all ticket prices very low.
This year, an OIC grant funded the
colourful flyer, but the Soulkas are
dependent on income from ticket sales
and donations. The Raffle Team will
be selling tickets at several events over
the weekend, and the prize draw will
be made at the end of Rock the
Bikeshed on Sunday. Please help by
buying plenty of tickets, and if you
don’t really like raffles, donations are
just as acceptable.
Dennis Alexander is returning on Saturday; this time he’ll be giving a show – Scotch Broth – for the youngsters late morning, and anotherfor the grown-ups in the evening.
