July/August 2015 - Food, Farming and Fishing

Friday is Show Time. The Sanday Agricultural Association hold their Annual Agricultural and Industrial Show. The best of the Island livestock - cows, sheep, ponies and poultry  will all be in the watchful eyes of visiting judges -  dog show will also take place. Make sure you all fill in your entry form in plenty of time. Forms to be collected from Drew Thomson - 600339. Inside the hall a huge array of vegetables, handicrafts, baking and lots more will have been judged in the Industrial Show. Make sure you have a copy of the schedule so you can show your wares - spares available in the shops. All the trophies won on the day are presented in the evening before folk can dance the night away into the wee small hours.

Saturday kicks off with Sea-Anglers departing Kettletoft Pier at 10am, returning at 4pm for the weigh-in and fish BBQ. Places on board boats must be booked by phoning Bill McArthur on 600381. Anglers must be aware that this is a full day at sea! Shorter trips could become available depending on boat availability. Own fishing gear is highly recommended. Hopefully the Kirkwall Lifeboat may make an appearance but not confirmed yet - see posters nearer the time. A home-brew and homemade wine competition takes place with samplers voting for their favourites, before a street strip-the-willow. Kettletoft Hotel are hosting the ever popular Kirkwall band The Condition for an evening of live music

On Sunday Dr Simon Hall makes a welcome return to Sanday to give us an interesting Orkney Language talk. Following this will be the ever popular Orkney Feast. Low food miles is the key to Jacqueline Seatter’s selection of food - from starters to puddings.

The Croft Museum and Heritage Centre will be open daily from 9.30am to 5.00pm, with a special welcome to Soulka visitors.

As well as all these ‘main’ events, we  have open studios, galleries, the Soulka raffle and more.  We look forward to seeing you and your visitors ‘oot and aboot’.
