CHAIRMAN’S BLOG 4
16 JULY 2012
The Committee met today with somewhat reduced numbers but we got through quite a bit of business.
We have finalised arrangements to move our meetings to the MacGillvray Room in the Library from the September meeting. The August meeting with the talk from Billy Cardno on North Isles Ferries will still be in the St Magnus Centre (as we have paid for the room).
Because of the illness of one our speakers we are looking at the possibility of either switching a session round and/or finding someone else to do the talk on George Brown Watch this space. We also need to find a replacement for the play readers at the AGM next March. We have some ideas but if anyone can suggest something we’d welcome the thoughts.
Pam is going ahead with the applications for the lottery funding for some kit to help us – we are trying for a projector, a laptop and some gear for the fishing group which has got 7 members now so perhaps we might look forward to hearing some fisher-folk’s tales of the ones that got away?
I gather the BBQ at Ken’s went well. I was sorry to have missed it but I was otherwise committed. 25 folk braved the elements and heard some good music as well. Thanks are in order to Ken for hosting it and to Pam whose soup and other things went down well (especially welcome on a warm Orkney summer night!!)
We are particularly keen to build on the work being done to publicise ourselves and show what a friendly welcoming bunch we are. Some folk commented on an earlier blog about this and I want to see that our publicity makes it clear how folk can just come along to a meeting and see how they get on. We have new posters going up and hopefully these can be seen by anyone interested. We shouldn’t rule out word of mouth and we can all try to persuade friends and neighbours to give us a try. This is why it would be very helpful at a time when we are beginning to think of things for next year’s programme if you have anything you’d like to see/hear or do please let me or any of the Group leaders/Committee members know – all thoughts gratefully received.
Last thing – as I said in the last blog, the Photography Group has been asked to put together an exhibition of photographs of the insides and outsides of the old parish Kirks of Harray, Sandwick, Birsay and Twatt for the new Kirk at Dounby for Dounby Show day opening on Thursday 9 August. It will be well worth a visit if you’re at the show or in Dounby round about that time.
