We had a very well attended meeting last Thursday when Tim Wright presented the Photography Group’s work from the last year. As a member of Tim’s group, modesty almost forbids me mentioning Tim’s remarks in his mail to us which records the compliments received on the photographs. I think the show has become a fixture in our calendar for the general meetings and we can look forward to the next one in February 2014. Sally MacKintosh has posted the show on to the Facebook page so that those who missed the meeting can see it.
There was a short Committee meeting yesterday to go through what we needed to do in preparation for the AGM on March 21st. The main business will be to go through the reports, consider the constitution and if you’re happy approve it and elect a Committee for the next year. Nearer the date Pam will email out the reminder for what posts are to be filled and what needs done.
We did discuss the possibility of setting up new groups and indeed how we might manage to accommodate the over subscription to some of the existing groups where we have some difficulty in expanding them further. I am not keen on waiting lists and to me it would be better if we could set up new groups if we can find anyone to lead them. On that note, there was a general view from Committee members that in general, leading a group was more a matter of co-ordinating the activity than anything else and it need not be too time consuming. It is down to an individual’s style and the members of the group to determine how it runs.
On that note if any member feels there is an area of interest where they would like to see a U3A group it would be very helpful if they could let anyone of the present and indeed future Committee know and I will mention this as a reminder at the AGM. One area we might explore is to see whether we would be able to associate ourselves with any of the existing groups in Orkney. I have put up a list of groups run by the other U3As in the north for general interest.
We have received what might be a useful starting point for a new group from a U3A member – Bernard Mouzer – for learning French and brushing up your French if you have some knowledge already. The link will be going up on the website and there is the potential for us to set up a self-help group to share learning.
Other than that it just remains for me to thank you for your support during the past year and to see you at the AGM.
