U3A Photo Group One - May 2018

by Barbara Todd - 10:07 on 24 May 2018
"Open your eyes, look up to the skies" (Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody) - mist! Weren't we lucky yesterday?
Thirteen of us (and 4 cars) gathered early on Wednesday and had a very pleasant sail to Westray. Although it was dull, it was dry and cool.
Once we arrived on Westray we all went to the Castle of Burian to see puffins. Sadly we only saw a handful of puffins, but did see dozens of fulmar petrels. Then we all went our separate ways, some to Taftend and Tuquoy beaches, some to Notland Castle and a few hardy souls walked to Noup Head. Some also visited the Wheeling Steen gallery and Grobust beach. Bird life was varied and Tom gave our group a running commentary on the types of birds we saw.
At 3pm we gathered at the Groatie Buckie cafe for afternoon tea and home bakes, then we perused our photos of Happy Valley and the theme of “curves”. Curves photos covered a wide range of subjects from the shoogly bridge to windy roads, a curvaceous lady and lots of rope coils and a bottle of gin in a curved bottle.
Many of us then drove to Jack’s Chippy for our “ carry outs” which we ate al fresco in the hot sunshine, while watching seals basking on the seashore opposite us, and reminiscing the day.
The June excursion will be arranged by Nirit, date, time and place to be arranged.  The photo theme for June is SEA AND SAND.
