U3A Photo Group One - Sept 2019

by Judy O'Connor - 18:31 on 11 September 2019

Fifteen keen photographers met on a blustery, showery day with the challenge of a photographic quiz in and around the nooks and crannies and streets of Stromness. There were 36 questions in all, some straight forward and some more challenging such as the coins in Porteous Close and the dog’s face carved in a rock. It certainly helped expand knowledge of the rich history of the town and its famous residents.

Everyone enjoyed the challenge and were rewarded with an excellent lunch at Ell&Co café. We then looked at the photos from Shapinsay which provided some splendid pictures of the gardens of Balfour Castle, the many flowers, grapes in the greenhouse, gardeners at work and their tools, pink wheelbarrows, a bug house, the avenue of trees and the castle itself outlined by a meadow full of cornflowers. Further exploration of the island provided photos of the village with more attractive gardens, a rusty petrol pump, graves stones covered in lichen and the iron age broch. Thank you to all who gave pictures for Elodie at Balfour. I am sure they will give her much pleasure.

The project this month was watercraft which produced an array of craft of every sort and description, cruise ships, canoes, sailing ships, pleasure craft, both in local waters and further afield, an intrepid windsurfer and a beautiful swan floating serenely by.

Next month’s meeting will be on the 23rd October, a plan of action to be decided later.

The project is “Roofs and Architecture” and Stromness had plenty to choose from today.
