U3A Music Appreciation - Group 1 - 2nd March

On Monday, 2nd March, the Music Appreciation Group One met at Jean’s house, and the theme for the day – ‘Female Performers/Soloists’ – was also her choice.  The resulting mixture was a blend of instrumentalists and singers, as follows:

 

            Hilary Hahn – violinist – playing the ‘Allegro’ from Samuel Barber’s ‘Concerto for Violin’;

 

            Lesley Garrett – soprano – singing ‘Hymn to Bacchus’ and ‘Infernal Gallop’ from Offenbach’s ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’;

 

            Tasmin Little – violinist – playing a movement from Bruch’s ‘Violin Concerto’;

 

            Lily Kraus – pianist – playing the ‘Allegro’ from Mozart’s ‘Sonata No 5 in G minor’;

 

            Billie Holiday, singing ‘A Sailboat in the Moonlight’;

 

            Virginia Black – harpsichordist – playing Rameau’s ‘Les Cyclopes’;

 

            Hélène Grimeau – pianist – and Sol Gabetta – cellist – playing the ‘Sonata for violoncello           and piano in D minor’ by Shostakovich;

 

            Susan Boyle, singing ‘Who I was born to be’, from her album ‘I Dreamed a Dream’;

 

            Jacqueline du Pré – cellist – playing the ‘Adagio’ from Brahms’s ‘Cello Concerto No 2 in F’;

 

            Jessica Burton and Sarah McNeil – composer/harpists – playing their composition ‘Aura’;

 

            Edith Piaf, singing ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’;

 

            Yuja Wang – pianist – playing the ‘Adagio’ from Rachmaninov’s ‘Concerto for piano and         orchestra No 2, in C minor’;

 

            Music from Malcolm Arnold’s ‘Belles of St Trinian’s’ from the film of the same name;

 

            Hila Plittmann – soprano – singing ‘Goodnight Moon’ by Eric Whitacre;

 

            Vanessa Mae – violinist – playing Bach’s ‘Toccata and Fugue in D minor’.

 

The next meeting, to be held on Monday, 6th April, will be at Louise’s house, and John’s choice of theme is:  ‘Male Performers – Soloists’.
