u3a Walking Group One - May 2024

by Tim Wright - 14:30 on 26 May 2024

Eleven of us awoke to thick Mist and a hint of drizzle but by the time we arrived at Yesnaby the mist had lifted but it was still dull with little wind. Off we set with a look for the Primula Scottica which was successfully found down by the fence. Lots of plants but not so many flowers yet but the blue Sea Squill was profuse instead. As we made our way to North Galton Castle we looked for the Artic Skuas which nest in the hill alongside the path. There was no sign of them and very few Bonxies patrolling too. The Blackbacks were nesting on to of the Castle safe for the present from any passing cars! Then it was a nice long walk to the Black Craig as the cloud lifted and we had sun. Two carried on walking from here to their Stromness homes while the other nine managed to squeeze into the two cars and make our way back to Yesnaby. It was good to see Margaret Rinder, an old friend visiting form the Lake District, who joined us and admitted it was the furthest that she had walked since leaving Orkney.

The next walk will be on Thursday 13th June, a week early as I have visitors arriving the following week.

Keep moving!
