First Gear / Momentum
Momentum is UK Youth's motor vehicle and road user education package, using young people's enthusiasm for cars and motorbikes as a way of engaging them in quality youth work.
Momentum is made up of two elements - First Gear and On Two Wheels. Both are training programmes for young people before they get a licence or their own transport.
The programme runs over a minimum of 30 hours and includes inputs from youth workers, a qualified driving instructor and an experienced mechanic. There are also opportunities to involve representatives from Road Safety, the Police, the Health Board and local businesses.
There are 3 main elements to First Gear and On Two Wheels:
- In the Mind - encouraging young people to consider the issues surrounding driving and vehicle ownership.
- Under the Bonnet/Tank - where young people, under the guidance of a mechanic, learn about basic vehicle care and understand the importance of regular maintenance.
- Behind the Wheel/Handlebars - a minimum of three hours basic driving tuition delivered by a qualified driving instructor.
The programme encourages positive attitudes towards driving, promotes informed decision-making, and challenges popular stereotyping.
