The development of youth football in Orkney kicked off in earnest in November 1999 under the umbrella of the Orkney Amateur Football Association.

The Orkney Youth Development Group was established in 2002 and is responsible for all youth football in Orkney. An associate member of the Scottish Youth Football Association (SYFA) the OYDG organises all the leagues (indoor and outdoor) for the Under 16s down to the newly formed (2015) Under 7's and Under 9's with Fun Fours and Super Fives for Primary 1, 2 ,3 and 4 as well as all the county squads from Under 11s up to Under 15s.

The County set up has allowed many Orkney boys to travel extensively to play competitive football matches with destinations including Shetland, Caithness, Aberdeen, Fife, Perth, Inverness, Dingwall, Edinburgh and foreign trips to Norway and the Faroe Isles.
